Horses in Winter: Inside or Outside?

Horses in Winter

Caring for horses in winter: should you keep them inside or outside?

The winter chill is upon us. Rain, sleet, cold temperatures, and even snow have settled in across the country. So how do you care for horses in winter and the colder months?  Even in cold weather, horses are happier and possibly healthier outdoors. Closed and heated barns are often inadequately ventilated, which can cause horses to develop respiratory diseases more often then horses maintained in pastures.

However, horses living outside should have access to adequate shelter from wind, sleet and storms. Trees, brush, or an open-sided shed or stable can provide adequate shelter. Always ensure your horse has fresh, clean water, never frozen. Hay & shavings can also keep your horse worm during the winter months.
